thermostat trouble

i moved into a new house a few months ago. It came with a Vermont Castings Radiance gas stove. The stove has the switch on the back that is On/Off/Tstat. It works fine on "On". It wouldn't work on "Tstat". I pulled the tstat off the wall, crossed the wires, and it kicked on in a few seconds. (Only 2 wires from stove) I bought a new tstat and it still won't work. I know it needs a millivolt tstat and the one I bought says it is compatible. Any suggestions? I would like to run it with the tstat instead of having to turn it on and off all the time. I did make sure that the tstat was set higher than the room temp when I tried it, so that's not the problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Where do the wires attach to the stove? Are they attached to the
TH & TH-TP locations on the valve terminal block?

I just looked at where they are connected. I don't see any markings, but there is only one place to hook them to. Red and Black wire. One hooked to each.

So, I got out the owners manual that I was lucky enough to have left in the house when I bought it. It say's to hook the 2 wires from a 500 millivolt tstat to the 2 blocks. It says they can be hooked up either way, doesn't matter. So I then bought another new thermostat and tried hooking it up. Nothing So I unhooked the new tstat, crossed the wires to see if the stove would start. Nothing again Now I'm confused, so I was looking at the manual again and poking around behind the stove, not touching anything, just looking, and after about 10 minutes, the stove kicks on ??? I still had the wires crossed. So I looked at the stove, wondering why the delay, I clicked the stove off and back to tstat again, and nothing ??!! At this point I've kinda given up on the tstat. I don't think there should be any kind of delay when the wires are just crossed, not hooked up to any tstat. The local dealer (who is not who installed the stove originally. They retired) wants $175 just to come here, not including any parts they may need, and if they don't have the require parts with them, it's another charge of $65 to come back They are a dealer. You would think they would bring pretty much everything with them unless this is how they make money. I don't know. So I'm not paying them that much for a house call. That's twice what I paid to have the furnace cleaned in my house this year. At this point, I'm clueless...?? One other thing. The tstats that I see in the stores all say that they are for 750 millivolts. Does this make a difference if the manual says 500, or is that a max range??

. Most DV gas units use them. They will burn out if they are used at that millivolt reading, tho. I like to keep them at about 550, but that isn't always possible, tho. I'd try running a different set of 18ga wires, directly from the t-stat to the valve & try it again.

So, I ran New Wires, Touched Them Together And The Stove Kicked On. Then I Hooked Up A New Tstat. It Kicked On And Ran Until It Hit The Set Point And Kicked Off. Problem Is, It Won't Kick Back On Again No Matter How Low The Temp Gets????

Pull the wires again & touch them together & see what happens..
You may have gotten a new T-stat that was bad from the factory.
I know it sucks, but it happens
