They figure 6' of snow by the time this ends...best wishes to all the families out there. We up in the north parts of Ontario know exactly how damaging and dangerous that much snow can be. Fire up those stoves, you're gonna need it.

Sounds like they are going to get some serious lake effect snow. This is the only place I know where it pays to put a snorkel on the house. Several years back when this happened people had to exit via the second floor windows.

Yup, around here we are expecting a foot or so, certainly no more then we are used to. The real big problem is the future forecast of temps well above freezing for Monday, this will most certainly cause severe flooding if it is accompanied by any amount of rain.

Hope is what I have for folks 500 miles away who have 4 feet of snow on their roof.
I change to prayers when that snow falls into their living rooms.

Sorry - not aimed at you or the good people of Buffalo. I feel for them and six feet of snow.

That said, during the winter of 2010 I lived in CT and we were getting hit with 1.5 feet of snow every week and it was piling up. I've done house stress calculations before and knew that adding some rain and wind to that amount of snow would result in some min-spec roofs to cave in.

My neighbors were laughing at me when I was up there shoveling the roof off the first time. Two more weeks of snow and some sub-standard roofs were failing (and that was just snow - no rain to soak into the big sponge on the roof). Neighbors started having drywall cracks and leaks. Nobody was laughing anymore and all of sudden advertisements for roof shoveling were everywhere.

Luckily, the poundings stopped after that and it didn't rain.

The point of that isn't to pat myself on the back. It's to recognize that hope is a sentiment and action is sometimes required.

My bad - things get lost when you can't see someone face-to-face. I'll tone down my big mouth..

I remember that winter. I also rake my roof whenever I get a big dumping.

Early in my home ownership I watched a foot of roof snow turn into a blue ice 8" high speed bump over the gutters. I had visions of a pool of water backing up under the shingles, so I bought my first roof rake.

With my ranch I can easily get the first 4' from the eves clear. Looks odd from the street, but I've never had water or frozen berm problems since.

For us non-western NY'ers, this serves as a nudge to get ready. Winter's coming.

Hit just west of us and to the north. Almost like the snow bands are triangulating our position just north of Syracuse. I fear the third shot. What is happening right now in western NY is almost biblical. A friend of mine took a photo of the wall of snow coming across the big lake. It looked like something out of an end of the world movie. I'll see if they can send it to me so I can post. Was taken just as things got started a couple of days ago.

Most here are prepped for it. Not really a big deal. Those unlucky out of towners caught travelling through the area though are clueless. We just hunker down, throw another log on the fire and pour another whiskey.

Sounds like several locals got trapped on the thruway as well as they were trying to get to work. This was no typical snowfall. There is lake effect snow which locals are used to, but for those that were in the main path it was epic.

If you look at what is expected by the end of the week, you may find you need to go back more than a few years to see a 7 day accumulation like this. Then maybe 60 on Monday? Will be great packing snow for snow forts!

I remember that. The images were startling. Folks weren't snow shoveling, they were tunneling.

I have a few friends up there.

One is worrying about her roof collapsing, another had her barn roof partially come down, with the horses inside. All are safe, but the barn is going ot need a major rebuild.
