I am looking for a timberjack tool for my dad. I already have a Stihl cant hook, but he wants a timberjack because he is 82 years old and lifting the log up a little bit will make it easier for him to buck logs.

As it stands right now, I am looking at getting this one for him, but I know almost nothing about this company or timberjacks in general.

The Stihl Cant hooks and Peaveys are made by Logrite (in Vernon Connecticut) and painted in Stihl colors. In my experience, these are some of the best, most reliable Cant Hooks/Peaveys available.

Logrite also makes what they call a "Universal Log Stand" which attaches to their Cant Hooks or Peaveys. They sell for less than $45.
Stihl also sells this same Log Stand for $50. If your local Stihl dealer doesn't have one in stock, they can certainly get it. Even though Logrite's price is lower, it may be less expensive to buy from a local Stihl dealer and avoid the shipping costs if ordered from Logrite.

I went to the Logrite website and now I have too many options. I almost want to go with the 78" Mega Hook cant hook and the Universal Log Stand. Just wondering if the Universal Log Stand will fit on that Mega Hook.

Edit to add: Added the Megahook and Log Stand to the cart and got a shipping estimate. $70 UPS ground from Connecticut to Maryland. Pretty sure I cannot justify the $70 in shipping when the Woodchuck Timberjack is shipped free by Amazon and it costs around $150. Looked for a Logrite dealer too. Not a single one in Maryland. Closest dealer is 70 miles away in PA.

My husband and I have the Woodchuck Dual, and it has been a big help to us. I think we've owned it for a couple of years, and it definitely comes in handy for lifting large logs and moving things around. We've never had any problems with it. I think it would be an asset for an older woodcutter.

FYI: You can find some of the Logrite tools on Amazon as well, and with free shipping. I see that many of their Cant Hooks are on Amazon, but not many of their Peaveys. Not everything is offered with free shipping.

Remember that Stihl dealers will have the same thing, but in Stihl orange, rather than Logrite blue. It appears they only carry thw 42" and 48" models.

I'm often working in the woods in somewhat cramped quarters, so the Megahook would be just too long to be useful for me (not to mention more weight to carry around.) Also, since the hook is optimized for larger logs, it has some trouble with the smaller ones: they list is as being for use with 15-45" logs.

I use a 48" Logrite Peavey and find it to be plenty for my needs here in VT (I don't have any 45" trees to deal with here). Several years ago, the folks at Logrite told me that the 48" length was their most popular model. I don;t know if that still holds true or not. It's rare that I find myself wishing for the 5' model, but I might order one some day, or pick one up when I stop by a logging trade show. The "standard duty" tools are incredibly stout. I've had two guys heaving on the end of my peavey with no sign of it being to much for the tool to handle.

Thank you!

I found the Logrite 60" Xtreme Duty Cant Hook ($158) and the Logrite Log Stand ($53) on Amazon. Then, I found the combo on Amazon for $190. Then, I found the combo on Viking Mountain Tool Works for $174 with free shipping. Just placed the order. My dad's comment to me was, "Don't buy me something cheap. Buy me something like what you would use." Guess this will fit the bill since it is exactly like my 60" Stihl cant hook, but with the log stand and in blue instead of Stihl orange.

I have arborists dropping off logs at my dad's place in a clear grassy area. So, the length of the cant hook isn't an issue. Doubt we will be going into the woods to process firewood anytime soon as we have processed about 5 cords of firewood this way since the summer. I just don't always have the time to get down to his place to help him process firewood. He has requested that I have more logs dropped off for him to give him something to do and to get him out of the house and away from my mother/his wife. The additional leverage of the 60" handle should help him turn the larger logs, as some that are dropped off are around 40" in diameter.

I have not been on this site for a while, but as usual, there is plenty of great advice and insight here.

Good luck with it. I doubt he'll need the Xtreme duty, even the standard ones last forever (about the only way I'll ever damage mine is driving over it with the tractor or dropping a tree on it), but if he's looking for a quality tool, you've certainly found it.

I didn't get the Extreme Duty yellow handle one. I got the "standard" 60" blue handle cant hook, which is exactly like my 60" Stihl cant hook, just in different colors.
