Time for a new stove

I have decided its time to move on from the northstar cs550 and get a good solid stove. My problem is that I want to be able to burn corn which limits my options a bit. I have found a 2006 mount vernon ae that was a floor model at the local stove shop and they have it listed for 3100. They also have a 2006 floor model harman pc45 for 3600. Was hoping to get some good insight for pros and cons of both stoves and if the price matches the stove since I have no clue what they are truly worth.

The PC45 is not in production anymore and it is a very reliable stove. All the parts are still readily available.

I thought it seemed like a lot of money being so old but they guy said it hasn't been used much and still looks new. A new mount vernon would be around 4100 for the AE and the E2 was a few hundred less (don't remember what he said).

If it is a 2006, it is one of the first models. I would make dang sure it has all the upgrades, or I wouldn't take it. kap

If you look around that age of stove is selling for a 1/3 of the price

THAT is a lot of money for a new stove let alone a used one. I don't care how much the dealer claims they were used, they are used. If you don't want to name the dealer on here I understand but at least PM me and let me know who it is. I know most of the reputable dealers in the state and believe me there are some other major ones that I wouldn't buy a replacement fuse from.

You can do much, much better than those prices, even on-line sellers if you know what you are looking for. The biggest thing to look for in a used stove will be availability of replacement parts. I don't care what brand it is or how much it cost brand new, if you can't fix it it is worth less than a cheaper stove that is new.

Quads other stoves will burn corn. I am burning corn in my Santa Fe. Quads other stoves will not ignite just corn, you either have to use a mix, or throw a handful of pellets in pot to start the corn. Then it runs till you shut it off, to pull the clinker. When it is real cold out, I just burn corn as pellets are overpriced right now. When it is warmer, I use a mix, so the stove can turn itself on and off. Right now, natural gas is cheaper to burn then corn. kap

I agree with needing a good dealer to service the stove. They seem very knowledgeable about stoves and have a service shop in my town so that is good. The reason I like the mount Vernon is that it auto cleans the pot so if I'm out of town for a day or more then it's easier for the wife.

Im on my 6th heatin season with an Englander cpm. I have only burned pellets so far being corn has been high the past few years. An issues I have had have been operator error. When it goes, if it goes, I'll buy another one.

Those prices on both stoves are out of line. I paid $1,600 for a used PC45 last year. All Harmans will burn a 50/50 mix of corn and pellets but the PC45 will burn 100% corn but is no longer made. There was an ex-dealer last year selling new but older PC45's last year in Brooksville, IN for $2,600 and I thought that was high when you can get a new P43 for $2,900.

Prices have probably gone up a couple of hundred on new models but no way I would pay that for either of those stoves that guy is selling. Have you looked on Craigslist? For what he wants I would be looking at new stoves.

The PC45's are good stoves and getting one from Bio it will have the issues worked out already. I like mine as well as my P68. Good Luck!
