Tips & rules for outdoor stove seasoning

Getting very close to installing the second stove, which is an older unit, but has been rebuilt with new cement, gaskets, paint, etc. I figure the new paint alone is enough reason to try my first few fires out in the driveway. I have some chimney connector pipe here, to be used for the eventual install, but nothing more. I've seen a few folks post they did their break-in fires outdoors, before bringing the stove inside. How is this best done?

put a few sections of pipe on it and fire it up. you dont have to get it blazing to cure everything. i would think if you did it when you could keep a small-medium fire going all day that should suffice for curing.

Figured as much... but how much pipe do I really need? Meeting the 15' minimum flue recommendation might be tough in the driveway, and would require the purchase of materials.

Stick a 3' length of pipe on it and fire it up out in the driveway. Just remember that the first fire should be light. You want the stuff to cure and that is best done with a not too hot of a fire.

Six feet of pipe works well. Keep the door cracked to get it to burn because the draft is gonna be crap. Did mine in the fall and had to keep knocking leaves off of it.

I used a 5' piece of HVAC ducting from Lowes. Didn't have any rigid pipe, only flex liner already installed in chimney.

Cool. Dunno if I'll get to do it this weekend, but it will have to be soon! Fireplace is pointed, and hearth extension subfloor is done. Wet bed is being poured in the firebox tomorrow morning.
