The last two nights here in south MS, the temps got into the low 20's to the mid teens. I've reloaded, done everything the same way I have been which has been working fine. But, my Condar Inferno magnetic thermometer that is mounted in the center of the insert directly over the door went to 725 degrees Tuesday night & 705 last night with the air shut down. The flames shooting out of the "tubes" in the firebox look like mini propane torches & lasted close to 2 hours, not to mention the beautiful blue, purple, pinkish flames floating around. On this thermometer, the "red zone/too-hot zone" starts @ 700 degrees, & these last two nights got me a little spooked. I may be a wimp & am still somewhat new to burning with this non-cat insert, but I have a problem going to bed with the thermometer in or close to the red zone. Even with the air closed, the secondaries got it to 700 but probably only for 30-45 minutes at most. FIRST QUESTION: Am I hurting my stove or in any danger at these surface temps? My owner's manual nor the company rep will give me a maximum temp, only saying that if the stove or connector are glowing, you're overheating. I ordered an I.R. gun thermometer that will be here shortly. With the surround around my insert, I cannot see the flu collar or the double-walled, insulated, stainless steel Forever Flex Liner. SECOND QUESTION: Where is the best place to shoot this insert with the I.R.? I really enjoy this forum, and I have put to use lots of the valuable information I have learned here. Thanks for the good guidance in advance.
