Got a message from my new tree service contact and he’s pricing out jobs and asked if I wanted wood. Looks like a massive cherry and oak tree, plus this third one (last pictures). Is this a white oak? Looks like it could be but a little tough to tell. I’d go for that first I think

Pics aren't great. Any way you can go look at it, maybe get better pics?
The last couple don't look like White Oak, though..

he’s still pricing out the jobs, so nothing concrete yet. But he was asking if he got the jobs if I wanted the wood. Or some of it anyway. I couldn’t tell if that last one was white oak, ash or maple species . Tough to tell..

I'd guess maple over white oak. Pics are indeed tough to go by. Some of the branch structure spells maple to me.
I'd go for the wood even if its red maple. You could always process and sell some, or give away to good neighbors like stovelker does. That's if you have the room.....

I probably have enough room for 2-3 truck/trailer loads. Then I would have to make space somewhere else, and I don’t think my wife would like that LOL

It seems like your tree service guy should know what kind of trees these are. I agree these pictures are not much to go on. The bark on the tree in last photos reminds me of elm. The shape of the tree does not, but perhaps it has been damaged some time in its past.

I agree he should know…but all he can distinguish is that it’s hardwood. I can tell from the first photos what the species are, but the last one is tough to tell. the structure looks a lot like a maple, but the way the bark is in the photos is difficult to tell. I’d have to see it in person.

The second one is dead standing so it could be ash. All the ash around here is dead.

Dead standing could mean dead/rotten.
Not ash. I'll stick with maple.

Not dead standing either. It is in decline though. There are to many fine tips in the crown showing evidence of life. The majority of the crown has this.

Winter can be very deceiving.

Norway maple by the look of it?
He’s cutting this up now but probably going to pass on this one. 45 minutes from me plus $10 in bridge tolls.

Burns hot. Not a bad maple.
Much better than red but, it's not the king of maple......sugar.
I'd pass too, unless I needed the supply. Does dry fairly quick and splits nice too. I'm sure you already know, LOL.

I’ve burned it before. It’s good. But don’t have time for that kind of trip today. He needs it gone today

Now seconding guessing, the limb bark doesn’t look like Norway. Maybe it is sugar maple?

You have to go 45 min and pay tolls to get it?, now I understand the reason for being picky. I'd pass unless I was desperate for wood for the future. It sounds like you live in a developed area but that usually means a lot of tree trimming closer by.

Yeah I don’t live in the country. But not in a super urban area either. There are a bunch of tree companies local, but none of them give wood away. They’ll happily sell it to you. This guy was the only one in 2.5 years that would do freebies. But I’ll post more in a little while, he may not be the guy I thought he was..
