US Stove model 2421

Opinion please on this cast iron US Stove. I want to heat my detached garage on the weekends. It will take a 27 inch log. The city of Suffolk,Virginia's requirement is that it be installed per the manufacturers specifications. The price is in my range.

Those style boxwood stoves are generally sub-par. Often a new stove that is EPA-exempt is made such by allowing so much air to enter the stove that it is easy to overfire the units. Many of these that are seen sold used, even for a short while, are white as a ghost due to being overfired because of this.

Additionally, garage installations (anywhere gas is stored) are not going to meet NFPA-211 guidelines for installation for a wood burning stove. These guidelines are mentioned numerous times in that stove's manual.

If no gas is stored in this area ever, then it may be possible to install a wood burning stove and be OK with local code and your insurance company. But, there are MUCH better stoves out there that do not cost much. Look for something EPA approved.

I had that one in the garage at my previous place. Used a lot of wood and didnt really throw a lot of heat but it was functional and served its purpose. I wouldnt advise stuffing it full of wood. Back half of my stove turned a nice shade of white and i don't feel i ever over fired it. I think they just turn colors from the heat.
