what is the rule of thumb for the depth sticking out from a fireplace opening of installing a hood to protect the mantle from excessive heat? I see hoods out there 4” 6” 8” depth but not really any explanation as to which one to choose. If your mantle is say 3’ above the fireplace opening and it sticks out 8” does that mean you want an 8” hood to divert the heat?
