Question:
We are interested in buying a gas stove or fireplace. We live iin New York State and were wondering if ventless gas stoves were
1) legal in New York (We were told a bill was signed by the Governor a few weeks ago) and
2) are they safe to use as a continuous heat source. We were shown the Radiance catalytic model in New Jersey a short time ago and liked it a lot. We would prefer a ventlless model as we would like to situate it on an inside wall.
Answer:
(Oct, 1997) A bill was signed that would make them legal, however it will be months before they are sold there. I don't think the gas police are going to come get you if you buy in NJ (grin)
BUT, vent-free are not for extended use. A catalytic is better than one that is not, but I still would not consider vent-free as proven technology for long-term heating. You should consider them for attended space heating for up to 5-6 hours a day.
