Vermont Casting Defiant Cat Temperature Probe problem

I just bought a new Vermont Casting Defiant Wood Stove and it came with a Cat temperature probe. To install I had to remove a plug in the back of the stove. Then install a clip to hold the probe on the heat shield. When I install the shield it won't go back because the probe is hitting the fire brick directly on the other side of the hole in the back of the cast iron stove. Am I supposed to drill the fire brick out to allow the probe to enter the stove?

The probe definitely needs to pass through the refractory material. From the 2n1 thread a few years back, I recall one of the posters mentioning having to push the probe through the refractory. I'm guessing there must already be a hole drilled in the refractory that is plugged with some material that can be easily pushed out of the away. The installation instructions in the owner's manual make no mentiion of needing to drill the refractory material, so I doubt that is necessary.

I will find out soon enough, I picked up my new flexburn encore 2040 last saturday but haven't installed the cat probe yet.

I had an encore 2n1 that I just sold. I installed a cat probe on mine as well. I pushed mine thru but when I did I tore the insulation/refractory in the back of the stove that the probe goes thru. If I was you I would use a drill bit and just use your hand to turn it instead of a drill. Also there is a small plug that you must pull out of the back of the stove.

FYI. My stove was a model 2040 that was purchased in 2010, the new ones might be different.

Thank you all for your comments and help. The manual said nothing about poking through the refractory material but given what you said it must. Thank you all again!
