Hi, I have a Vermont Encore wood stove and recently replaced the catalytic element. The throat hood covering the cat entrance came off easily but it will just not go back on, after many hours wrestling with it I am at my wits end! I remember having similar struggles a few years back but nothing like this. Anyone familiar with this stove have any thoughts or suggestions? The problem seems to be the little knubs near the pins keep catching the vertical metal protrusions on the fireback preventing me from sliding the darn thing in. Maybe just try to file some of that metal away? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Yeah I had already read a couple of threads on here, unfortunately they weren't much help. My wife and I are ready to kill this thing. Any chance if I just bang away at this thing with a hammer that I could do real damage to my stove?

Your hood is most likely warped, maybe the fireback too. I used to hammer the side pins of my hood back to a straighter position allowing it to fit back where it should. This was only a temporary solution until the replacement hood came in.
Ultimately I found a great permanent solution, I sold my VC and bought a new stove.

Thank you. It doesn't look warped to the naked eye but it clearly must be to be giving me this much trouble. We're just trying to get through one last winter season here so I'll see what I can do with the hammer. Glad to hear you don't have to deal with this anymore.
Finally got it back on....it took a bit of filing of one of the back knubs on the hood, and some taps from the hammer, but mercifully that process is over. Webby I did clean out the fireback channel, I agree there is probably no tolerance with it to make the it seat properly to get enough room for the hood. Thanks for the responses. With any luck that will be the last time I have to do that.
You can get a new hood from Woodman's for about $30, it takes less than 1/4in warp before it won't fit. Lay it down on a flat surface to check.
As others mentioned also check the lower fire back, though the hood usually warps first. Like Webby mentioned that bottom channel must be clean, if not you will know it because the lower fire back will hangup on the bottom edge of the upper and then the wedges won't fit.
