Question:
I have an opportunity to buy a '75 VC Defiant, and the guy's throwing-in a complete rebuilding kit--still in the box--for $350 (total for both). VC's web site says that the company was founded in 1975. Is this a good stove? Was that first year a good production yr? And, how difficult is it going to be to rebuild this thing? Directions look pretty complex...Rick
Answer:
How do you know that it is a 1975.? That date is cast into the rear wall of all Defiants, and it represents that design date. The stove may be a few years newer than you think. It's quite a job, but when you are done you will have a very large and capable stove....although without the clean burn, etc.I'd offer a little less...the stove cost $450 when new back in 1977. If you enjoy rebuilding, etc - go for it. If not, save your $$$ and buy something newer or in better condition.
