Welp time to get some wood so I started building my wood stack things....

Not sure what you call them. But I will be building 2 this size and 1 smaller. Between the 3 I think I can get close to 2 cord stacked. Anyhow here are some pics. I bolted some of it with 3/8 x 4 bolts and some of it is screwed with torq head epoxy coated deck screws. I even notched it out.

I must say I really like these torq head screws. 10 thousand times better then Philips.

I think I want to add a cross piece on each end but other then that I think it will hold. What do you all think?

Nice heavy duty build, should last many years.

Piece of metal roofing, & they'd keep most of the rain off.

I'm thinking you might want to get some more support under it. If my eyes serve me right those are 8' and 12' 2x4s. So say you have 7' x11.5' useable, put 18" long splits on it and you have nearly a cord right there (7x11.5.x1.5=120). Thats an awful lot of weight on 2x4s supported every 6 feet.

I will be using 16" splits so hoping to get 3/4 cord on it. You eye is right its 12' long and 7' high.

I could add some more support but I was jumping up and down on 1 of them and it didn't even really flex much.


As far as roofing goes..... The plan was to add metal or plastic roofing. Will be looking at that next week. I need to build 1 more of these tomorrow and then do a bunch of speaker wire stuff in my basement build so its ready for drywall.

Could be wrong, but my eye says it's gonna wanna twist without any diag support at a corner--maybe just one at a top corner or two -- try stressing and see if it needs it.

Oh I agree.... I will be adding on each end a diagonal support tieing in both sides.

Do you think this will be needed? I figured since it is tied together at the top it wouldn't need the gussets.

Rick...nice build. I agree with some of the above suggestions. Corner bracing and support underneath. Although you are tied-in at the top, much of the weight will want to "push out". I think your set up will hold, but the outward weight is gonna stress your legs big-time. My racks are 16'x6' and are supported every 4 feet underneath that sit directly on block. You will also notice the corner bracing.

Hmm. Ok will add some gussets along with the diagonal support on the ends. Going to try to build a second 1 today.

A suggestion, if I may......turn the 2x4 uprights 90 degrees to the wood like Stax has.
The 2x's have less strength the way you have them oriented, and the wood will try to "push" the ends out.
Diagonal bracing should help that also.
Otherwise, nice.

Yea the next one will be built a little differently. I thought the notching would help with the weight but it was a big PITA, so the mains will be turned on the next one.

I built a smaller version that I put in the stove room. Notched the legs and used 1x oak for the stretchers.
One of the legs broke off at the notch because there's a knot there. DOH!
Didn't help that one of the dogs banged into it.
