what causes this?

ran my pleasant hearth ph35ps on new england premium wood pellets for 10 hours or so on medium setting and when cleaning out the burn pot this morning and again tonite after 8 hours of running it is filled like the picture below and basicaly is all one big clump of ash that comes out in huge chunks. third picture is a side view of the burn pot with the front plate off showing how deep ash is in it.

Try a few different brands of pellets.

so far all ive tried are these ones and stove chow from HD. i just wasnt sure if it was the pellets or if it could be my setting for air intake, I guess I will try a bag or two from tractor supply next.

My Pelpro always looks like this too. I burn Somersets and Hamers.

Looks like a soft clinker.
Basically a clump of crap/ash/fuel/etc. that is not completely consumed.
Could be the pellets.
Could be control settings.
Cold be airflow conditions.

Too many variables to diagnose from here.
In the interest of solving the problem.....only change one thing at a time and run thru a few bags to see results.
Also don't discount weather in your findings. A warmer day where the stove runs on low gives different results than a cold day where the stove is running on high.

thanks, i adjusted the air trim to give it more air, it seemed to make it not as clumpy but the heat output went down, i run it on the automatic setting that goes by room tempature so it goes up and down on the feed rate. im thinking it is the pellets so im going to go back and try another brand if i can find one locally.
one thing i noticed this morning when i fired it up was smoke coming out of the double wall of the appliance adapter, i used rtv red on the stove exhaust and slid on the adapter and put a screw in it like instructions said to but it didnt say if i was suppose to put any rtv into the female part of it since it isnt in use and all that was in it was the rope gasket

Yes,clean pot(more combustion air),vs dirtier pot(less air),is only something you have to decide.More heat is always good,IMO,even if you have to go to stove and use a old chef spoon,or bent screwdriver,and flip out the buildup in the bottom of the firepot.Stove does not have to be shut down.Newer stoves,that do not have a drop pot cleaning system,figured this out some time ago,they have,in the programming,where it ramps up the combustion blower,reduces the feed,and blows crap out of the pot.I doubt yours has this,I have been trying to find the programming on your unit,it does not show it.We have not had "crappy" pellets for quite some time,out here,but,where you live,it is a possibility.And,of course,Bottom feeder stoves do not have this problem.

yea every hour that stove runs it goes into purge mode for 99 seconds and ramps up blower and slows feed to purge the burn pot. im guessing it will just come down to fooling with air intake trim and pellet brand till i get to where i think is good, when it purges it isnt getting the crap out of the pot so when ut shuts down and restarts when temp is needed the pellets start to over fill the pot before igniting
