Take a look at these candles that are on the mantle above our insert. Last night a visiting guest closed the double doors leading to the living room where our insert is. This is what we found this morning. My wife opened the doors to find conditions like a sauna.
The candles give us an idea of the heat in there last night.

That's too funny. Seems like you need one of those automatic gizmos to control the temps on that insert! That or some viagra ;-)

Wow that is a cool picture. I think you would need perfect conditions to do that. Normally the candles would just start melting and dripping all over but it must have been JUST hot enough to make them soft but not so hot that they melted.

The brass candle stick holders (metal) got pretty warm and the candles adsorbed their heat. They got hot from the bottom up.

Limp noodle

Thats funny, Looks like the brass got hot and softened the wax near it allowing the stiller candle top to stay straight as it fell over and the wick kept the whole thing together..

Looks like the beginnings of a good Salvador Dali painting. I think most common candle wax melts at 130-140F, and softens a little before that - I'd say you easily had 100F+ though.

Interesting that both candles wound up facing each other - I would have thought that they might have hit each other while bending down - or maybe you just moved them for a better photo?

Somebody really needs to have a 'caption this' photo contest now....

candles salvageable? cut the bottoms off, taper them and put them back into holder?

The candles are normally on opposite sides of the picture, but I moved them to get a closer snapshot of the pair.

That is a pretty cool picture, but I have to say that is also a bit scary. I don't like it when I find things like this. Imagine if somthing even a little flamable had been close by. Glad to see it was only the candles.

Of course maybe I worry too much.

It's really cool, the way the candles melted. But--what's up with your houseguest? "La la la, I think I'll close off the main heat source for the house!" Is this someone who usually plays with the thermostat in the middle of the night, but had to change tactics at your house?

Hopefully there are no expensive electronics in the room. They don't like to see very hot temps for a sustained period of time.

This was a teenage friend of my boys. Need I say more?

BTW: The plan was for him to sleep on the sofa in there. Good thing he left the room after closing the doors. Maybe he felt that the rest of the house was too warm.
