Some maple variety imo

Hard to see but the cut ends don't look like cherry I know

I think insee some spalting --> maple

Well, I went and checked it out since it was only 10 minutes from my house , and to my big surprise. There was a huge pile of wha to believe is red or white oak (pretty sure it’s red, but I’ll take a better look)! I’ll have to check in better light tomorrow or the next day. So I took as much as I could and what I couldn’t fit for now he’s putting aside for me! Ran out of light so couldn’t do much more tonight. How cool is that. All free from a tree service guy.

The oak was piled on top. I also cut everything to my desired length. I didn’t take any of that for now, only the oak, but he said there is a whole tree of what the initial picture was that he has to cut down (not today) but I am welcome to that also he said if he wants. It was lighter than the is, noticeably, so I don’t think it’s locust. There was a broken branch on the tree he has yet to take down and has an almost cream colored wood, similar to a maple (as you thought) but I’ll take a better look when it’s on the ground.

sweet score!

Sounds like you’ll be way ahead for next year!
If I can find a place to store it without pissing off my wife!! 🤣. I’ve got probably around a half cord sitting in my truck, plus more oak that is still there. All the big split trunks and knotty pieces left

I’ve already burned more wood so far than last year, probably gonna be 4 cord this year. There is space to fill in on pallets that are empty from what I used this year so far

I get crap and mines stacked behind the shop where she can’t see. Just tell her it’s the same wood that was there in spring?🤣

She wouldn’t know the difference back there unless she saw “new” stacks in different spots. One of the FB groups I’m on was talking about how many years ahead you are, and I said about 3, the post popped up in her feed and said “If we are 3 years ahead why do we need more wood? Answer is we don’t “. Lmao. So then I explained the whole seasoning time and having to keep a rotation. She doesn’t quite get scrounging is a disease.

Free heat is a disease...when it's wood. A way of life.

You'll find the space. Grab it all! This winter's toll is growing. Don't recall if you're splitting by hand? Perhaps rent a splitter when all is ready in rounds if you don't have one. Keep it tidy and moving. Maybe start a home improvement fund from monies saved on utility bill. Give her something to smile about. LOL
Honey Locust
The cut ends in the truck gave me the same thought but, the bark screams no.
Red oak.....

or the rare Road Island mahogany.

The wife would just turn the thermostat up and pay a small fortune over the course of the winter to keep the temperatures what the wood does pretty much effortlessly

I’m still not 100% sure what that other wood is. Definitely lighter than the oak, though.

And I do split by hand. Fiskars X27 or the fiskars 8lb maul. At this point I can split much faster than a splitter. As I get older I’ll eventually invest in a splitter

I was suggesting, if you do grab all that wood, to just keep it cut into rounds. Once it's all home, rent the splitter for a day. One more day to stack it all. It'll be done and she'll be happier? ......maybe? LOL

Mine's a finicky thing and I've been driven to disconnection. I just do what I gotta do at this point.

I only have two accesible spots on my property to store wood. One is out front next to the driveway and the other is opposite the walkway that goes from front to back, right outside kitchen window. I finally have softened up my wife from "I don't want wood stored during the summer" to "ok only two cords and no more" Unfortunately, I have an elevated backyard and getting wood there is near impossible. I do have a dog pen that is unused right behind the house that I could stack wood in. I will have to try a face cord this spring and see how it goes.

Any one have any idea what this stuff is? I don’t think it’s maple. Smells like and looks nothing I’ve encountered before.
