I'm going to have to go with "wood." ;) :)

On a serious note, I cannot really tell . . . a closer shot of the bark might help.

The bark Looks like black cherry to me. But it's hard to see in this picture. More light maybe?

Certainly looks like firewood to me.......LOL
 
It is Pignut or mockernut hickory. It has the two tone red/white color. It looks stringy and so do the splits in the cart. The left of the split shows the X like bark ridge pattern typical of pig and mockernut.

And they are plentiful across NJ.

Ask the neighbor to fondle his wood to see if the bark is really hard and sharp. Hickory bark is harder than anything else. It is quite obvious once you are aware of it.
 
After further research it must be hickory. Thanks for the suggestions.
