Hello:

I’m installing a block off plate above my stove, which sits inside an old masonry fireplace. I removed the “beauty plate”, which is just a piece of 8” stove pipe that covers the stainless steel liner connected directly to the stove. I noticed that some of the cement/mortar/sealant at the collar joint is gone. See attached.

Is this furnace cement? Something else? What should I use to patch this?

Thanks in advance.

Someone put furnace cement around the stove adaptor going into your insert. Its not really necessary, the mechanical screws are the proper connection. The adaptor will expand and contract as you see by the cracked furnace cement. It looks good like it is. You could put more furnace cement in place, but the same thing will happen. Take care.

Thanks, I hoped that was the answer. The stove was just installed earlier this year and I haven't noticed any performance issues.
