Question:

When an insert says "approved for prefab"- other than being of a size that accommodates a prefab- what makes these inserts DIFFERENT from those that don't have the "approved for prefab" mark on them?

Answer:

They have been designed and tested so as to not place excess radiant heat on surfaces in or around the pre-fab units. Pre-fab fireplaces are installed into wood framing, which could ignite if the fireplace is used improperly or if an unapproved inseert or stove is installled.
