Hey guys, going to install a class A chimney at my parents house soon and need some pointers to protect the chimney from sliding snow. Their house is located in a very high snow load area. The house has a metal roof so the snow slides several times a winter. Also, the chimney will be located closer to the eave than the peak of the roof.

I have seen some installations with a wedge of some sort to direct the snow around the chimney but I am not sure what they are called or where to get one. I've also considered installing something upslope of the chimeny to keep the snow from sliding altogether. Any suggestions? Other ideas?

Thanks.

I have seen some pretty massive chimney crickets while driving around northern VT and on occasion in NH. Even with them I have also seen some bent stacks. What seems to work is a set of "cutters" mounted upslope from the stack to cut the sliding snow in half and then a full width cricket to deflect the halves to either side

Near the bottom of this link you should find pics of my set up and a brief description of what I used. My roof is steep and seldom sheds more than 4" at a time. Talked to a few old timers before even buying a stove and came up with what i did here. Let me know if I can provide any more info.

Thank you all for your input! I didn't know where to begin but have a much better understanding of what is required.
