There's a coming out tomorrow night to estimate if/how much a new flue in the existing chase. Should I go for a 6" size, which would in all liklihood meet requirements, or go for a larger one, like 8" for more flexibility? Would a stove/boiler, etc, with a 6" exhaust be able to tie into a larger diameter flue or would it need a liner?

hey "foot"....personally, if I had to do it again, I would opt for an 8" flue vs a 6 so I can go with a bigger stove if I wanted to. not sure about the boiler....you thinking about an outside unit? I know they are popular up there. a guy over on the end of momrow road, about halfway to the kipple used to sell them I think.
.....got your shovel ready?? talked to my brother in stephentown and he said you guys are gonna get dumped on tonight.

I would figure out what stove you are putting in it before worrying about what size to get the flue should match the unit. 8" will be way to big for many of the stoves available even allot of the boilers use 6" or 7". I personally haven't seen a new stove with an 8" outlet I am sure there are some out there I just haven't come across one yet

Tonight? We got dumped on this morning but I got an early start to work. I'll deal with it when I get home.
There was a guy on the way to Hoag's Corner that used to sell them. I think those type are outlawed in NY now.

I'm thinking about an inside wood boiler...OR...a pellet boiler.

I didn't know there was a 7". I was basically wondering if you can go wrong if you upsize, but don't necessarily want to buy a liner for a brand new chimney.

yeah we are getting dumped on here in pa to that is why I am not working. I would at least narrow down your choice of boiler first I think you will find 6" will work for most but do your research first I could be wrong.

yeah there definatly is 7" and yes if you oversize to much your draft will suffer. it would probably still work but not as good as it could and boilers tend to be more touchy than regular woodstoves so you should really get it sized right.

you need to size the flue to the stove/insert you are planning to install. You may also want to consider the chimney you plan to put the flue into to ensure it will fit down the chimney.

This is definitely not an area where bigger is better. The EPA stoves and inserts are engineered for a specific flue size in order to maximize efficiency.

didn't know those were outlawed, my brother just over the line in mass has one and burns just about everything in it.....come to think about it, that's probably why. supposed to get 2-4 more "today" according to the weather channel, none for tonight.

On the one hand, it'd be nice to have the flexibility to put in something with a larger flue requirement in the future, but on the other hand, I wouldn't be crazy about putting a liner in it right off the bat, but I guess that'd be way to go for that flexibility.
