Dito what Brother Bart stated. I am lucky, I usually burn only 2 cord a season, so I happy when I reach the 6 cord mark. But as we all know "your never done".

When we can burn dry wood for three years without any more wood work.
I've got five years' worth stacked. Might not add much to my stacks for a while unless I come across some primo stuff like White Oak or BL. Oh, that reminds me, I do have a dead Shagbark I need to get. And I'll always get more Black Cherry if I can; It's my favorite shoulder wood. My in-laws aren't three years ahead yet so I'll be bringing up more wood for them to split and stack...

That's what I do too, but I burn several species that all dry at different rates, so it makes it harder to keep them separate for subsequent years unless you have designated stacks for year and species. If this is a problem you may have to figure out a way to organize it all. Regardlesss, I'd try to burn the oldest wood first.

BEFORE I got my stove I was reading on here about what I needed to do. So I was a little over 2 years ahead with soft wood like soft maple, cherry , walnut and so on. Then I got ahead by cutting more and everything that I could get, now I am 4+ years ahead. Now I cut to replace what I burn, softer woods are on a 2 year cycle and the hard woods are on a 4 year cycle. Hopeful by the end of this year will be 3 and 5 cycle.

For me personally . . . I would go with C.

In our case it's door #3. Three stacks, each holds more than enough to get us through winter. The oldest is being burned. The next stack in rotation will be ready to burn the following winter. Third stack gets used the winter after that. This practice ensures that the wood will have three years to dry by the time we need it.

We replenish during winter as we go. After a couple weeks of burning, a gap is left. Easily enough refilled on a weekend trip to the sawmill. By the end of the season we're still three years ahead. I'm loving this as there's no mad dash to get 4 cord of wood CS&S before the summer heat and humidity set in.

To me this means you are only 2 years ahead because you are burning the 1st years wood

To me this means you are not ahead at all because the 2 years green is still green and drying.

So my answer would be to always, at all times, have 4 years of dry wood. That is "Truly" being 3 years ahead.

I have 3.5 cords of oak that I could have used this year and are left over for next year.
I have 4.5 cords of maple for next year.

I gotta get a move on for 18/19 even though I probably won't be "out" of firewood to burn until 19/20

I've got pine out the ting yang so I'll never freeze, but I won't sell pine to buy oil or gas.

Just the three cord for the current burning season. I try to keep a nine cord rotation going. Getting harder to do.

i hear that... i probably have enough for next year, but we will see when i finish taking down the rest of the trees and cleaning up from the last spring storm. i might be able to get into 2017/2018, but probably not yet.
