When do you stop. New pictures

I have about 6 cords in log lengths waiting to be cut and split. I just had to hire someone to cut a few maples on a rental property I just bought, going to have that delivered to my house, tree guy said it should be about 5 cords. so I'll have 11 cords that'll need to be cut, it's gonna be a busy fall / winter, hopefully I can get a lot cut and split before the snow comes.

Sorry, but I live, eat, breathe, and sleep on getting free firewood, I think that I think about firewood at least 25times a day; every morning I see my stacks outside the window while drinking coffee, on the drive into work I look at other peoples stacks, or smoke to see if there burning, always looking for a tree on the side of the road, at work I sit by our forester (power company) so I hear about cutting tree's down all day, when I go to a job I look for tree conditions, or I see lots being cleared for a new house or business, at night I see my stacks again or a friend calls about splitting wood.
I am an addict and my exposure to this is not helping my addiction.

I use pellets currently (buttering up wife to get wood burner to replace gas insert), but understand the struggle. That need to hoard fuel. That longing to know you will have enough fuel. Problem is, it's never enough...

I betcha Osagebndr is hoarding a lot of "inferior" wood as well. Never burned Hedge yet but I scored about 1/3 cord a couple years back...haven't even split and stacked it yet. I think it's going to be a novelty wood for me...mix in a couple of splits once in a while if it gets real cold. I don't like sparks either. There is a huge stash of Hedge that was cut down near here about nine months ago. I left the guy a voice mail but never heard back. Now it's pushed up into piles for burning. I may go look at it again to see if there's any bigger stuff that wouldn't be too hard to pull out of the piles, and try to contact him again. I'm not obsessed about high-BTU wood as I was a few years back. If I can't get any, no big deal; I've got access to plenty of other good wood, either here or scrounges...lotta Red Oak, some White, and a bit of Hickory and BL. Got about 5 yrs. stacked.

You could buy a new saw that way while also having a reason to cut more wood. I don't see a downside.

Yeah makes sense to me, for sure. At this point I seem to have found a good source of log length for $100 a cord, so if I just keep buying and splitting (by hand for fitness, so like 20 minutes a day), eventually I could be at a point of being able to sell a cord here or there, even just to cover the cost of the wood and then to cover some equipment costs.

For the amount of work it takes me (hand splitting) I don't think I'll be going into the firewood business but if you don't mind doing it WTH?

As far as the original question. Now that I have a good supply of dry wood I figure to burn about 2 cords/yr so I'm going to keep about 8 cords on hand. Scrounging and processing 2 cords a year shouldn't be too taxing but is still enough to satisfy my wood kicks.

I don't know what your definition of "a few" is, but either you have some massive maples, or "a few'' is something in double digits.

Get that hedge split soon Woody. The longer it sets, the harder it is to split. It's probably too late to split it by hand, your maul will probably bounce off. You'll have to use a hydraulic splitter now.

Never turn down free wood leave it in log length I have about three plus years worth sitting stacked on four acres and always looking for more never know it might be slow to get more hoard away

Forgive me please, I turned down a load of Ash last week. Course I am still working on the last three loads ,1 of honey locust, 1 of elm, 1 of white oak, keep running out of daylight. Also getting a bit tight storage wise- got to watch out for the city employees. I have around 40 cord css as it is. That's about 8 years worth. got to get what I have now css before the snow flies- maybe 3 weeks of time left.

Thanks for not making me feel all that unusual! I'm new to this forum but have been splitting (by hand) for years. The "itch" hits me on the first crisp fall day, and if mother nature hasn't provided enough timber over the summer then I start looking for trees that aren't doing so well--that, or I go scouting around the neighborhood...

Well, the first load came today. I cut it all after work and rolled it into a pile. I call the high dept foreman to say Thank You. He says your set now? Oh no bring more, everything is cut and room for more.. Now the BAD There was One log of PINE Oh no PINE. It will be split and be throw in the pile.
