When Room Temps Are Too Hot

Had my wife at work with me late last night, and had the Hearthstone and the room temp cranking...not hard to do when it's 40 degrees outside. At some point about 11 pm, the office she was sitting in hit 80.9 degrees. She who is always cold naturally, insisted that we open the windows and back the temps off.

Until it hits 83 or 84, I'm good with those temps as long as I'm not trying to really concentrate on a difficult task. I especially like to get it hot before I leave so it's fairly warm in the morning when I come back.

Curious what high temps people have had their spaces at and at what point they cry uncle and crack the windows for relief?

If I were paying for gas, I'd be trying to find the minimum temp I could tolerate.

Got up to 90 the other night and had to turn on the window fan. 34 outside and open windows didn,t cut it. The fan stays in the window all winter.

Impressive. I never had any temps close to that. That would be a little much.

My wife has about a 5 degree temperature tolerance it seems, 72-77F. But that's ok. It's nice to air out the house once in a while. It gets stuffy in winter.

I'm at 81 right now in the basement and 74 on the first floor. Much above that I'll open the outside door. I don't like to waste heat but sometimes it's necessary.

Ha. That seems very common. At 70F the Missus will tell me she is cold... 74 and she starts complaining its soooooooo HOT.

I can deal with up to 75 during the day. When its starts creeping north of that I will think about windows and let the stove go out. I can stand to sleep in anything over 68-70 tho so in the evening I close the bedroom door to let it cool. My usual routine is to aim to reload when the stove room drops to 72 and shut it down before it hits 74. Keeps the rest of the house around 70.

I have hit 90F in the 450sqft room with the sotove, when i was trying to get it hot. But i dont try that anymore. Thats way to hot. That temp was with it in the 40s or high 30s outside. I just turn the blower down and reduce air one i approach 80f in the room. I have a 2500sqft home but about 400ft is closed off unless i want to heat if for family. so i heat about 2100sqft.

I have had temps in the low 80's in the stove room and around 72 in the far off bedrooms. We either dress lighter or crack the door if we had too. The more days the stove is on, the warmer the house gets. Its so cozy.

I like it in the low 70's. About 75 is as hot as I will tolerate. I vary the heat first by how I load the stove, second by how I run the blower, and third, by opening a window.

When I first got my stove last year, I loaded it up for the night. I left the door ajar to get it going and after 10 minutes closed the door and waited to start adjusting the air down. Well, I was not feeling well and fell asleep on the couch, only to wake covered in sweat. Looked at the weather station on the cabinet across the room and it read 89.9* inside and 16* outside. I have not let it get that high again, but, it regularly gets to 80-82 in the stove room. If it is too uncomfortable, I will turn on the furnace fan to circulate the air through the house, which usually lowers the temp slightly.
Oh yeah, and this stove has spoiled me and my wife. If we are not burning for whatever reason and let the furnace take over, we are now not comfortable at our old setting of 70-72* The wife had the t-stat on 74* the other morning and I about blew a gasket!

Outside temperature in Imlay City Micigan is 34 degrees and my living space thermostate reads 73 degrees. It's very comfortable in my home at the moment. Christmas Eve my Living space thermostate was in upper 70s and we were all passing out until I cracked kitchen window.
Temps in 80s would be way to warm for me and my family...

Very similar here as well. My wife is now 6 months pregnant so she has been colder than usual. But that works out fine. Especially because it has been so mild so far.

*I can control the heat output pretty drastically. Turning the fan on high pushes a crazy amount of heat for immediate heat blast when needed, but if I shut the fan off the radiating heat from the stove and brick fireplace really lengthens the burn time, and softens the heat output. Most of the time the fan is on low for steady heat.

I like the pick-up truck in your profile. 1980 was when gas was still reasonable. In Smokey and The Bandit, there's a sign for around 40 cents in one of the chase scenes. I'm too young to remember that, but I do remember 70-80 cent gas.

Fist bit of cash after my first real job i bought that truck, i wanted one since i was about 12! Im only 29 and i can rembember 90 Cent gas! Heck we hit about .99 here in 01 or 02.

My wife too.. and when she's not complaining about the temp.. to hot/too cold, then she starts in on the "dry heat, makes my skin dry and ...blah blah blah..

I've learned the two magic words.. "yes dear", without trying to fix it. Works some of the time.

I don't care for temps higher than 74 a walk in the park for the King,I could and have easily got it to 85 once and could have hit 90 had I turned the blowers on that is in a 750 sq foot room. We like the back of the house at 65 for sleeping and keep the doors closed to our room .Most of the others rooms are easily maintained at 70 total house open floor plan with a 50 foot hallway 1600 sq. ft.I often use the blowers for a quick warmup when stovetop temps hit 500 and warm up quick she does.

Luckily wife and both agree, top comfortable temp is 74 over time (still higher than I want I find 70 on the nose ideal)...75 is an I'm starting to feel sick zone. People who sit in 80 temps in comfort amaze and astound me.

Bad news is that we have an old VC Vigilant in our 900-1000 sf home and it's almost impossible to burn at lower temps without becoming a pollution machine for the neighbors. I'm always told here that it's always better to have too much stove rather than to little. In my short experience I heartily disagree. Much rather have a single 1500W electric at the other side of the house and spend a little more over the winter than perpetually dreading the heat. Different strokes I guess.

Wife never complains, she can work the stove too. The butter on the kitchen counter used to stay hard all winter. Now we are just happy to be in the mid to high 70s. Anything more and we actually feel a little ill.

The small downstairs room where my stove lives hit 110F last night on the wall across the room. . . Granted this works to my advantage b/c it's a radiant-type stove, so it doesn't send heat upstairs very well until the room gets very hot. Next stove I have in this room will be a convective-style (jacketed) stove...

My crew likes to keep the temps between 75-80 degrees. The poor dog is trying to grow a winter coat and we've got balmy tropical temps in the house and she is walking around with the tongue hanging out and drinking a lot of water...
