I am wanting to put a wood stove insert into my existing Zero Clearance fireplace (not masonary). My current firebox is not insert rated and would be unsafe and against code to put an insert in it. I have looked all over the Internet and cannot find a site that sells these fireboxes anywhere. I just want to buy a new firebox which will accept a stove insert. Can you recommend a site(s). I know they sell whole zero clearance/stoves together such as napoleon brand. But these units cost around $4000 and is out of budget. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like you just need to replace the ZC unit with a new one that is EPA rated. Modern units are efficient and will perform well and safely. The PE 30FP is more like $3000, but you most likely will need to replace the chimney pipe too.

What you are trying to do is not a good idea. First, there are limited combos of ZCs and inserts that are allowed. Second, the new ZC will likely need a new chimney anyway and third, buying a new ZC just to install an insert in it is inefficient. It's like buying a new house just to place your furniture in.

If budget is tight you may be better off putting a rear-vent freestanding stove in front of the ZE with a full chimney liner.

I would actually prefer a wood stove. I want the englander 30. I'm still wanting my fireplace to be appealing as well though. I was thinking about removing my ZC unit. Boxing in my empty fireplace area. Running a new chimney down my old 10" one and have the would stove set where my ZC unit was. I just don't know if it's to code with it being half in my boxed in area and half out. The half inside would be about 20" to the top of the boxed cubby and the other half would be out of the cubby. The only thing is I don't know if this work work because most all wood stoves say must be installed with an 84" ceiling height.
