When we did the install of my new stove recently, we used the stove's manual to determine the distance from the wall to the stovepipe. The manual shows clearly 14" from wall to stovepipe. Realizing now that 18" must be used as a safe, legal minimum distance, I need to make this right. My first option is an approved heat shield mounted on the pipe, but I've never seen one and not sure where to go. Second option is double wall pipe, which is pricey. Third option, I have access to sheet 316 stainless through my work, and could mount this with the proper air gap, non-conductive supports etc. Probably look sharp too. Is uni-strut that is used for running conduit approved as a non-combustable mounting material? If not ,what is? I've enjoyed this forum since finding it about a month ago.

You can get it from any "Do It Best" Hardware store. If they don't have it in stock they can order it in from their distribution center and you don't have to pay shipping.

Also, they have some on this site:

If you don't want to wrap the pipe with one of the shileds above, you could mount a shield to the wall like you are talking about. HY-C makes a thin black metal stove board with a bit of instualted maerial covered in metal. They sell spacers to mount the board to the wall. Lowes and Menards stock these boards.

I had the same issue and chose to go with double wall stove pipe. I bought the Metalbestos Telescoping pipe from a local distrubtor for $150.00

This double wall looks a lot better than the 3 sections of single wall I was planning to use. Sure it costs 10 times more but safe is the only way to go!

Here is a thread I started about heat shield last week:

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the good advice, except from the Jayhawk fan  After seeing a heat shield, I don't doubt that they'll work, but they are just plain ugly. I agree with the double wall pipe advise, but I'm not convinced that I may loose some btu's up the pipe that would normally be radiated into the room.
I still need to know what is an approved non-combustable material in which I can mount the SS sheets on. As my original post asked, is uni-strut legal in this application? I know about the aspect of galvanic corrosion between SS and other metals, so I would also take that into consideration.
Lastly, I've had to re-register from my home pc as the forum didn't recognize my original username/pw, so Ozzy is now OzFest.
