My husband found like-new Whitfield Advantage 2 at an estate sale - $500 for the stove, a ton of pellets and hearth pad. I was nervous about him installing it - and wanted to get someone in to do it (we have a mid-century modern house, with double brick walls and an insulated air space in between).
I brought our oldest to NYC over the last 2 days for a college audition, and of course, when I wasn't here, he studied up, went out and rented a tool and installed it. Gotta love that "Yankee" in him. Now the "worried wife" is home, and I have a few questions...
I smell a faint odor - thinking it's smoke - pics below show it's installed about 36" from a (drafty) glass window. Now, that measurement is on the INSIDE. On the OUTSIDE (because of the curve and the thickness of the wall, it measures about 48" (pics below). Because I'm paranoid and love my kids, I turned the stove off, will go hunt around for the Carbon Monoxide detector to install, and he will fix the drafty window when he gets home today (and of course HE loves his kids too, and is doing this so they can be warm).
Do we need silicone/something around the outside?
I don't know that he used a thimble, I don't see one, but I think he read he didn't need one going thru brick?
What do you think of this installation? Did he do OK?
I cannot believe he went thru the double brick wall. He said it was not easy, made a HUGE mess and so I guess it's good I wasn't here when it was happening.
We are in Mass and it is FRIGID here.
While we had the stove on, that area of the house went from 57 (yes, 57) to 64. Pretty amazing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The kids are SUPER happy to have warm bedrooms (we have forced hot air, but their rooms are the farthest away from a too-small furnace).
Thanks!
Kara
