who runs their stoves when they aren't home?

I don't mind running my stove if I have to leave for a couple of hours here and there, but I generally don't run it when I am at work. I have my oil heat kick on just before I come home to get the house up to a reasonable temp and then I light the stove and it does the rest.

I'm tired of burning oil so I'm considering running the stove to keep the house at 60 degrees or so when I'm at work. What do you guys think? Who runs their stove when they are at work? Good idea or not?

Great question. I'm interested in what people say.
I run my stove 24/7. I was heasitant at first but remembered that my father runs his the same way. I prefer to run as lo as she'll go when I leave for work. Only 6 or so hours unattended.

I run my stove as much as possible. I leave it burning when I am gone all the time. Load it up, open the damper, let it get crackling hot, damp it down and head out. It will keep the house above 60 for 14 or more hours, depending on the outside temp and wood type. If I am going to be gone longer, I fill the stove and let it burn out, and set a pair of electric oil filled heaters out set to 50 degrees.

i don't even think twice about it. The stove gets turned on and set in the fall when it turns cold and shut down in the spring when it warms up.

To answer your original question: We all do.

If you have zero issues in letting an oil-fired furnace run to keep the home warm while you're away, then a properly installed and maintained stove should be just as trustworthy. If it is not, get rid of it.

The only time mine is off, during the heating season, is for its weekly cleaning. The rest of the time it runs in automatic mode.

I run mine 24/7 the only time I shut down is to clean it. Sometimes when we go out I will shut it down so that when I get back the stove is cool enough to work on.

Mine will be cool for the first time in about a month today so that I can clean it out.

My wife is homeschooling our boys so it's not left unattended much, but for me, it makes me more nervous to leave my wife in charge of it than to leave it running when no one is home.

My stove runs from about late October until late April...Only shutting down a few times to give it a front-end cleaning. I know that my stove is safe, it is correctly installed, properly permitted, and loaded with safey features. If something goes wrong, it will shut itself down. In the way, way, way off-chance if something were to ever catch fire while we are home, we will hear the smoke alarms screaming...... (I have alarm-overkill) and if we are NOT home, then there is no chance of losing what is most important to me, and insurance will pick up the "tangibles".

It took me a couple days before I trusted the stove enough to let it run 24 /7, but now I don't even think about it. I worry more about a leak on the dishwasher or washing machine than I do about the stove.

Pack the hopper Friday night, head for the cabin, return Sunday noon to hear the last pellets slide down chute. I trust my stove that much, but I won't leave the clothes dryer run alone for 10 minutes when run out for more beer. (Note that I said run out for beer, not run out of beer, that just don't happen)

I run two pellet stoves 24/7 (themostsat controlled) and leave the oil fired furnace on in case they have a problem. I've been doing this for 7 years . The only time I shut the stoves down is for cleaning or when I go away for an over nighter or longer.
