South Jersey
Object: Hear others experience with how much square footage the Osburn 3500 Insert covers.

Situation: South Jersey weather, Bi-Level home, upstairs living room has cathedral ceiling with a loft and additional bedroom, square footage of house is probably around 2800 due to the loft. We have 2 fans hanging from cathedral ceiling. Obviously the insert will be installed downstairs. The chimney is around 25'.

Question: Do you think this model will be sufficient to heat the entire home? If not, I may go with a smaller unit downstairs and add an additional insert upstairs next year. Also, does anyone cut the upstairs floor and add a short piece of duct and vent to allow downstairs heat to come up the bedrooms easier?

Thanks!

That will be a lot for any single stove if one is trying to make it the sole source of heat. During milder weather it can work out ok, but may need supplementing in colder weather. Two stoves or a wood furnace may be a better solution if the goal is to heat exclusively with wood.

Houses differ greatly also. Are there a lot of windows? How’s the insulation?

As an aside, have you put your wood up yet? It takes time to dry. Firewood sellers, for the most part, don’t sell wood that is dry enough.

As an owner of an upstairs and downstairs wood stove I can say running both is a chore. I’m second guessing my choice of an insert over a heatpump in the basement. I really want both. The coldest 5-7 days a year I’d light a fire.
