Wood I.D.? Oak? (maybe?)

Looks kinda like the Pin Oak I split last. "Kinda" being the key word.. Its got an almost smooth bark and dark heartwood... Smells Delicious

Any takers... I only have a little of it? But just wondering. Its gonna sit for at least 3 yrs. So it doesn't matter what it is....

I like to keep wood separated by species. (I know, its wierd)....... Oh and its heavy. I dropped a half round on my Toe (literally, the way it fell, it was the corner to the Big Toe/ Not Good)...

Well, I'm pretty sure its not Oak. Not real sure on what it is though. But the bark and the color of the heart wood doesn't seem right.

What does pignut hickory bark look like? The dark heartwood and light sap wood looks like wood I've had in my stacks before but never took the time to ID. It looks like it has an awesome grain!

Hickory for sure-Mockernut as someone said I believe is correct; PRIMO stuff-it's just great fuelwood-GREAT SCORE!

Yeah, been there with the toe thing before too; was working with Hickory interestingly enough years ago on a hillside and when I was pulling one of the rounds down the hill towards me underneath was a big rock that came down and hammered the big left toe-man I saw stars for a few minutes and felt like I was gonna pass out! Weighed some of the rounds on a scale back home and one was 100 lbs. Don't know if I could lift that now at almost 52-probably could but something would probably give way, herniate or break if I did lol!

After seeing all the Pignut on here, I thought it could have been, but wanted to know for sure.So Mockernut huh......... Never even heard of that one. Glad its some good stuff. I may only have about a Face cord of it. But seemed like it was pretty good stuff. Just judging by the weight. !!

Definitely Mockernut,great stuff.What I remember its not quite as stringy as most Shagbark..A handful of that along with few scattered Bitternut Hickories at parent's acreage.At least 90% of the hickory are Shagbark though,some Shellbarks aka Kingnut a few miles south & east of there but none that I know of on the property,nor Pignut either.That diamond cross hatched bark is a good identification feature.

Take it easy with that foot,Dexter.Its gonna be sore for a few days.Another reason I always wear steel-toed boots,even just moving wood around or mowing the yard.

Unless it's a transplant we don't have mockernut hickory in Ohio. It's a bitternut hickory.

Well.... I went back and did some more splitting this afternoon (with Steel Toe Boots on!). All was well untill I dropped another Large Round (half round/ Just split and lost it) and it landed on the same toe. !! !! !! Even with Steel toes, the pressure and weight almost made me see stars....

I am not the type of person to sit all day and do nothing. But for the rest of today... I am done. Drink in hand and my 2 dogs joined me. My 15 yr old Mutt (Princess) and my 7 yr old Shepard (Oscar) are being lazy with me. My Son, his buddy, the Wife, and my daughter are all chillin in the A/C...

Im gonna watch my garden grow and my stacks dry.... My garden is only 8 tomato plants, 12 peppers (assorted), 4 cucumbers, and 2 pumpkins.

Temps are pretty reasonable today. Feels rather nice in the shade, w/ a calm breeze

Oh and by the way, I agree with Thistle on the steel toes. There are two types of footwear that I will wear.....flip-flops and steel toe boots. And that's it!

haha me too though no flip flops but regular leather sandals also have a pair of 15 yr old white nike hi tops that are worn maybe 10% on off days.Still look decent though not perfect Would like to find a replacement pair,dont want to pay extortion price for NOS ones & dont like the looks of newer sneakers either.....

Yeah. Told my 10 yr old Son to slap me if he sees me workin in Sandals again.... I have tried to make it S.O.P to wear the right gear and use the right tool for the job. I took a shortcut and look where it got me...

Cookin Burgers on the grill now. (Mama bought some pre made Black Angus Cheddar and Bacon bugers / 1/3 lb) Hope there good?

I normally make our burgers (Take Hot sauce, Worcester, onion, mustard, and some steak seasoning. Then mix together). She says they looked like something I would make/like? We'll see

I'm guessing, pignut, mockernut, and bitternut are all the same species, just regional name, it's pignut from where income from. I went and look up all three species and yes they are individual species, with similar regional title what I grow up calling pignut was actually mockernut also called "hognut"

Dexter, most folks who work in the woods sooner or later end up with sore toes. Most learn from the first one though. Seriously, I hope that heals fast. As for the steel toe and the sandals, those are two that I won't wear! Especially the sandals; my feet freeze.

I love Sandals. I have several pair. These are 3 in the rotation now. I dont like Flip Flops. Although I have a half dozen pair of them

The burgers were good... Better than I expected. Now to sit down and watch a movie with the Wife and Kids. Been nice to relax for the better part of the day. Not a lot got done. But it was rather enjoyable.

As for my Grill... I hope to get a Pellet Grill/Smoker. Was gonna buy one this year. But Englander is relaeasing one soon (Getting tested now/ Thanks Mike Holton).

I dont wear gloves much except when carrying/handling rough logs on my own time or lumber/plywood,broken concrete,metal on hot days for regular job,sometimes climbing ladders/scaffolds & cold/rainy days.Years of construction my hands are leathered with calluses.But my feet are very tender,always have been,dont even like going barefoot in the house or outside on the grass.Dont mind the cold or heat (to a point) long as extremities stay dry.But if my hands/feet are cold & wet,that's misery for me.
