Splitting up this tree that fell during a recent storm. No leaves or other ways to identify it, seems like a hard wood. Any ideas?

Also looks like ash to me. Think of a baseball bat!

Very interesting as it could be Ash. What about the grain? To me, the grain of the wood looks to be Oak....again, just an observation. I'm definitely curious! :)

Here are a few more pics of the bark and grain. Very pretty grain!

Those splits do look alot like ash.

I'm in with the ash crowd.
* Can you check the branch/ twig arrangement ? If opposite, quite possibly ash.
* Also, check for borer holes in bark, if D-shaped exit holes (EAB) = ash.

No rays in the end grain or ray flecks in side grain, so it doesnt look like oak to me. X bark, holes in bark, end profile and very noticeable pith hole says ash to me. Either way, nice stash.

Yup! I'm going to go with Ash as well. After looking more at pics on Google, plus seeing the holes and the "squiggly" lines under the bark - definitely Ash borer damage. Thanks for the help everyone!

Looks like it might be green ash as I have 2 that have identical bark. Where did you get the wood? I have 2 in my yard that I have been treating with pesticide for the Emerald Ash Borer for the last 3 years. The borer was confirmed in the New Haven area a few years ago. About a 1/4 of the tree is dying and there were some signs of them on my trees so they are probably going to come down soon.

It is ASH

It's ash. The little B.B. Size hole right in the exact middle of the round is the give away. Better than oak to me. No waiting 3 or 4 years to burn
