Hi,

I managed to acquire a pretty good quantity of logs last week. Can anyone help ID what type of wood it is please?

I thought maybe it was Oak from the shape of the leaves, but its pretty difficult to split, so im not so [Hearth.com] Wood ID request [Hearth.com] Wood ID request [Hearth.com] Wood ID request [Hearth.com] Wood ID request [Hearth.com] Wood ID request [Hearth.com] Wood ID request sure.

Im in the UK in case you need to know :-)

Thanks
JC

Has to be some sort of white oak. Maybe in the UK the bark is smoother than we may see in the US, but the leaves are definitely in the white oak group.

Something in the White Oak group for sure. Primo stuff. Will take a couple years at least to get it optimally dry, though. What kind of deal did you get on it?

English white oak since you're in the UK.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, sounds like Oak gets the vote, so thats good.

I got it for free Woody Stover, a friend tipped me off that the council had cut down a tree and left the logs piled up on the foot path. Its a bit a grey area as to whether your allowed to take them or not, but I figured if I didnt someone else would!

"Take" has such a negative connotation. I prefer your original wording, "acquired." ==c

The reason it is hard to split is you have a lot of odds and ends there. A straight trunk would probably be a lot easier to split than the branches you have. That doesn't mean it won't be great firewood.

Yeah some pieces are definitely easier than others. Im was tackling a real gnarly Y iece yesterday. Think i might have to resort to the saw for that piece!

Excellent ID skills everyone, much appreciated.

Its spooky, but if you look at the photo of that English Oak in the Description section of the Wikipedia article posted above, i drove past it yesterday! Baginton is only 3 miles from where i live!
