Wood ID - standing dead for a while

So, I found some very dead wood that I bucked in the woods. It measures below 25% when I split it yesterday - some even 13%. Hardly any of it is punky and/or soft as it fell onto other trees and was off the ground. I have no clue what it is, however it has a very strong oder once I brought a few pieces into the garage. It's almost like a strong rubber or chemical smell. I can't place it at all.

Sorry Doc Savage. That's all I got. If the oder wasn't so pungent, I wouldn't typically care at all. However, I'm curious and don't want to do something stupid...and want to learn me some wood knowledge.

Are their any trees that you have burned that have such a strong oder like this? And/Or are there any trees you shouldn't burn in regards to them being harmful?

No. Strong odor sort of points to popple or cottonwood though but could be something else too. Looks like just a small amount of punk but should burn okay. Don't sweat the odors; just think of all the bad things people say about red oak and how it stinks. Still great firewood.

Looks like dry punky maple of some kind. Your pics are washed out. Not enough detail in them.
