WOOD ID, would you keep this???

I dug this out of a fence row today. What is it and would you keep it?

I would keep it. I figure if I touch it, move it, put the saw to it, it's coming home with me.
Usually stuff like that I leave as huge as I can that will fit in my stove, since it is already bone dry.

Not sure what it is but looks like decent wood, and as mentioned, dry. Dry wood is the best kind; Easy sawing, splitting and burning!

First piece looks like mulberry. Bark will fall off the middle is gone but it looks like nice dry wood.

The un-rotted portion seems to not be punky (and is probably very seasoned). I don't recognize the species, but I've burned worse. Heck, it's even going to be super easy to split.

I was going to say elm also, but just my best guess. I would definitely take it! Easy to split, already dry, sounds like my kind of wood!

Take it, looking at the grains its a good hard wood. Or carefully cut it into 2ft sections and put it on the camp fire right side up, they make great torches.

It has the look and color of black cherry. Any idea how long its been down?

My guess is very OLD black locust which can lay on the ground for years w/o rotting and then decompose from the inside out. Great burning wood.

Yes, I would keep it. It looks solid. I don't know what kind of wood it is but I would keep it.

Guess so, I've got a bunch that looks just like that!

No sure what kind of wood, but looks similar to the bur oak I cut when dead like that. Should burn good. Will be tough on your chain though. Looks like you already have moved it so cut and burn it. I might leave some of the hollow rotting stuff in the woods, but once I have time invested in moving or cutting it it will be getting burned.

I'm currently burning Silver Maple that is half punky. My house is warm.
That stuff there is solid & more dense than my maple ever was.

I bucked it up and split it. The moisture meter read 8%, so in the Buck it went. I am enjoying some of it as we speak.

I have no idea how long it was out there, but it is burnig great.
