White Oak. I can see the medullary rays in the photo, and in Maryland there aren't other oaks that have bark similar to White Oak.

Definitely an oak. But which one?
the plates look like black birch or shagbark hickory not white oak.
The white oaks I have here in NY have soft outer bark like white ash.
Its probably something in the white oak group.

No question about it....White Oak. Not always able to tell from pics, but no doubt this time.

there are only 38 or so varieties of white oak, and something like 56 varieties of red oak in North America so don't feel to bad.

Yeah, toward the base of the trunk, but if you look farther up, the bark becomes scaly, sometimes looking almost like Shagbark.
