Yeah, toward the base of the trunk, but if you look farther up, the bark becomes scaly, sometimes looking almost like Shagbark.Definitely an oak. But which one?
the plates look like black birch or shagbark hickory not white oak.
The white oaks I have here in NY have soft outer bark like white ash.
Its probably something in the white oak group.
