My neighbor processed a downed tree. Very dead. Very dry. Any idea?

It's not dark at all.

I just went on bing and did a run on tupelo and from what I can see here and there that is it.

I doubt there are many Tupelo in Nockamixon, Pa. Tupelo doesn't grow as far north as PA, but there are Black Gum, which look similar.

It split too easy to be gum, I'm at a total loss.

Looks very similar. But it says its very difficult to split. This split like butter. his 13 year old daughter was doing some of the splitting.

Well there is a very limited amount of trees it can be. Decomposition will make even Elm easy to split. Elm turns yellow which is not a healthy color of the wood.
Once fungi and dry rot and other things start to work and the wood breaks down its clear sailing.
Maybe this tree has been dead a long time?

Looks like persimmon or dogwood bark to me

Ok... I'm almost certain it is persimmon, Bark is identical. Looks like a fruit wood to me. And it burns way too hot to be tupelo.

Too bad you got your hands on this wood at the punky end of its life.
I looked at wood pics of this tree on the internet. All white sapwood except for a tiny margin of very black heartwood. Very interesting!!
Never seen this wood anywhere and least not in whole cross sections. I love the internet.

I dont' know what the spots were, but it wasn't punked. It was hard as a rock.

It's Persimmon, and one of the best firewoods around here with a btu rating upwards of locust and ironwood.
