My neighbor just grabbed a nice little pile, maybe a quarter cord or so, of wood from a guy down the street. It looks kinda like red maple, but the leaves that were laying around looked like something from the hickory family. The rounds are very heavy.

Thanks.

You should be able to id hickory with your eyes closed just by the feel of the bark alone. It's uniquely hard and sharp. No spongy or corky like feel at all. That does look like pignut or mockernut. One looks less defined. I can't remember which is which.

I'd say Pignut, but I not familiar with Mockernut. This is the Pignut from my property.
