[Hearth.com] Wood id [Hearth.com] Wood id got a small amount of this type of wood from a craigslist ad. Not sure what it is. Very heavy, comparable to hickory of the same size

Cant say that I have ever seen that type of wood before..

Do you have a picture of a split piece? My guess is Mulberry. The growth rings are really big, even for Mulberry, so I may be wrong.

Bark does look like mulberry. But those growth rings!!???

My guess is some sort of ornamental. I bet when it drys it will be very light weight.

My first gut thought was catalpa but the bark is slightly off...growth rings seem too wide for mulberry? I wouldn't put too much effort getting more of that as it will dry to be a very light and fast burning wood.

I was thinking mulberry and seems like several others suggested the same. Growth rings seem huge... you'd almost need a brisk walking pace to stay out in front of something growing that fast! But might have been a case where the main tree was cut and a side shoot grew, still having access to the older root system and a bunch of new sunlight. I've seen a few cases of accelerated growth in those conditions.

Split it today and it was clearly yellow wood. However, it was so incredibly easy to split, I cannot imagine it was a high but wood like mulberry. I'm just guessing on this, as I haven't knowingly seem mulberry before.

It is probably Mulberry since it was yellow. They grow like weeds, but I've yet to see growth rings that large.
