A friend of mine took down 2 small trees and gave me the trunk sections. I believe it is hickory, but not 100% sure since I never worked with it before. There is a leaf stem attached to one of the pieces.

Cincy, unfortunately I think you are right. I tried to split it and it was terrible. Never had any wood like that before. Its all twisted and interlocking grain. Im going to end up noodling the bigger pieces that need split.
 
Looks like gum to me as well. Terrible to split from my experience. Good luck.
