A friend of mine took down 2 small trees and gave me the trunk sections. I believe it is hickory, but not 100% sure since I never worked with it before. There is a leaf stem attached to one of the pieces.

Looks like blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica). In the third pic the leaf margin appears entire.
Blackgum has simple leaves with entire margins. Hickory leaf is compound with margins of leaflets serrate.

Cincy, unfortunately I think you are right. I tried to split it and it was terrible. Never had any wood like that before. Its all twisted and interlocking grain. Im going to end up noodling the bigger pieces that need split.
