wood identity

Hey guys,

I have a ton of this wood available to me. Free wood is always good wood, but im curious what it is.

Here are some pics.

A friend says its poplar, but another guy i know says its a type of oak. Im clueless about types of wood.

It looks like maple to me, most likely silver. Any better bark pictures? Oak and Poplar are going to be incredibly different weight wise.

With that pic I'm not so sure about maple. Whatever it is, it seems that it's been dead for a while.

It came down during hurricane sandy and was cut at the roots 2 weeks later. The tree was propped up by another tree and we took it the rest of the way down and cut and split it in sept. So its been dead since nov. 2011.

Next time i head up to the wifes uncles house ill take more pics of standing trees. Thanks for the possibilities.

For reference, silver and red maple are considered to be very comparable BTU and seasoning wise. Some people call it "soft maple" and use it for shoulder season, but I mix it in with the rest of the hardwoods.
