Wood pile "housekeeping"

Heck we have had all these pics of wood piles. Should have one on "housekeeping the woodpile" too.

I spent a couple hours today policing up the pile, replacing pallets that were shot and picking up all the bark and debris underneath. Wood has been selling briskly already and the pallets in the pics were full a month ago.

The grass got beat up from all the truck and trailer traffic in the last week but isn't too bad.

It was cold a week ago and rather than golfing I cut a couple loads.

Quick question, how do you measure out what you sell? Do you measure before you load or just eyeball?

Eyeball, hardly. I pride myself in guaranteeing people don't get shorted.

In the right hand side of the 4th pic., you see an orange rod. That is a 48" driveway marker I use for reference when stacking. I then go a good 6" higher for account for shrinkage. Uglies go on top and are a bonus.

A cord is 12' double stack or 6' four rows deep. I then measure with a tape midway from the ground, and use orange marking pain to draw a line at an angle of how the wood will taper when removed.

Thanks Bandit, I have been trying my hardest to stack in measureable cords but with the odd sized pallets I have it's a lot of math. I have 4 cord of ash I may try and sell this winter since I am not burning yet.

I have a german shepherd and shes great with the wildlife. Doesnt bother anything. Do your dogs chase the deer?
My brother has a black lab that chases everything that moves.
I always thought you told the age of bucks by the points on their antlers but I read an article in Outdoor life that health is an antler size factor not necessarily age. And that boy looks really healthy.
The second thing I never knew was that they shed their antlers every year and that would be a nice set to find.

The dogs get the "Iron Fist" for chasing deer.

We find sheds in the yard on occasion late Winter.

Actually Kade is the same breed as Yatt, (Duetsch Drahthaar) although he looks like Duetsch Kurzhaar. (analogous to the GSP as recognized by AKC)

Curious... how much do you sell per year? Is it delivered or do people come to pick it up? I have been C/S/S faster than I can burn it and am up to probably 4+ years of wood. I actually made a little kiosk and sell bundles for $5 but am considering trying to offload a few cords too. Not start a real business just make some room for more wood and maybe get a few bucks in the process. Wondering what your experience has been.

Well the firewood business has been growing. I can easily sell all I can make, it's my hobby in the winter and source of exercise. Lately most sales have been repeat business and referrals. Craigslist works well, take lots of good pics.

For folks wanting campfire wood, I made this rack up and sell it for $25 and it holds about 250 #'s. This will NOT FIT in a small sedan. This is about 1/5th of a face cord.
