Wood stove for my new work shed

I have two pellet stoves for my living spaces and now am looking for a wood stove for my new shed. (new construction) The shed is 16 x 16 with a Gambrel roof and a loft. Hight from floor to ridge vent is around 15 feet. Looking for a small stove to heat so I can work out there in the fall-winter-early spring in comfort. What would be your recommendations for a small stove to heat this area? Have 60+ acres of woods behind the property so fuel is no issue. Many thanks!

I'd reccomend looking at some of the small stoves Travis Industries (Avalon/Lopi/Fireplace Xtrordiar) has to offer-

While I can't speak personally about these stoves, I have a good family friend who has the predecessor to the Avalon/Lopi 1250, the Lopi Patriot, & it has been serving him good for over 8 years now, with very few problems.

Also, while they tend not to be my style of stove, Jotul also makes a really small "cigar box" stove-

Space that size could be heated with a couple of electric space heaters. Low capital investment, no flue to install, no muss no fuss. That being said, I have a small wood stove in a shop not much bigger than that. Rick

I'm thinking a small Drolet, Century or Englander VL-17 would all do the job if you're looking for a new stove to install. Otherwise, a small used Jotul or Morso would do the job fine.

Thanks to all for your suggestions...I think I will look for a used Jotul on Craigslist. Now that the season is over, I can see more than a few used ones available and of course, have time on my side.

+1 on the space heater i have one 6 foot base board heater that heats 12x16 shed quit nice and doesn't take much room.

So what does do for your electric usage??? Have you measured that? What is the cost?

I would look for a used stove for a shed like you have. You should be able to find a reasonable stove on Craig's List or here-

The price of the chimney is the problem, which can cost more than the stove. I would look at other forms of heat that don't need a chimney such as electric or kerosene.

If it was me I would look into those hanging gas heaters with the built in fan..man they heat fast.

Even as much as I love wood burning I would consider the alternative of a gas or propane style heater, or electric. 320 square feet is so small that you may run into storage issues with safe distances. The tube style gas or propane heaters mentioned before are about the same price as a wood stove after complete install. I guess it all comes down to your decision but I think you may benefit from something less than a wood burner???

HehHeh . . . that space is less than the space of my woodshed . . . of course I hold a couple years worth of wood under cover.


For the record . . . it's your shed and your decision . . . but I would go with a gas or electric space heater myself in such a small space.

Our electricity is quite expensive here. A 1500 watt heater would cost about 30¢/hour to run on high. Your electricity probably costs a lot less. You could run it a long time and still not approach the cost of a stove and pipe. Plus, no maintenance, less fire hazard, easy to use. Boring, but efficient, not like having a real fire. I'll miss my fire this summer!
