The glass on our old wood stove (which came with the house) shattered, and our chimney sweep sold us a used replacement stove (cheaper than replacing the glass, he said). We like the "new" one, it works very well, but we are trying to find documentation about it as there is an unusual vent on the back of the unit that we're not entirely sure about. The metal tag on the stove's back says

Fire View
M #230

R.L. Stevenson Co.

We've searched the Web and simply cannot find a mfr. by that name (lots of references to Robert Louis Stevenson of "Treasure Island" fame, however!). Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Mel&Mike

Welcome aboard. Not sure about the model of stove you have, but I'm sure others will be around shortly to advise. Do you have a picture of this unusual vent? Sounds to me like maybe a place to hook up a blower fan or perhaps an OAK (outside air kit)?

Can you describe the stove's looks or post a picture? Is it a cast-iron, or steel or a soapstone stove? There is a Fireview soapstone stove that is very nice. There was also an unusual barrel shaped stove called the Fire-View. And there are some British Fireview stoves made by Woodwarm too.

Thanks for the replies. This "vent" in the back is a squarish "arm" (for lack of a better term) that extends a bit from the back of the stove and has a sliding door on its end. We are taking photos. And yes, this is indeed a barrel-shaped Fire-View. Side-loading, with a glass front that has flap vent doors to open to keep the glass cool. It's already got a blower, so the back vent in question is probably not for that, but perhaps for an OAK? Anyhow, we will post the photos shortly.

Thanks again.

Does it look like this one? (broken link removed to http://medford.craigslist.org/hsh/253134972.html)

what the "help me please" is that thing ? looks like its hooked to a mechanical draft system
Hell I dunno, tis what I found LOL. Scary huh? An early Englander experiment??? J/K ;)

Maybe where VG stole their barrel model from?

Some steel barrel models were popular on the west coast. Orleys were made is this design, though a bit smaller. The medford posting is the one I saw too. Looks like one bear of a barrel stove.

Agreed, that sucker looks beefy, like almost overfire proof.

That's our baby, thanks! Though ours is in much better shape - with a little cleaning up that one is WELL worth the $25 he's asking. No need for us to post a pic of the stove itself now, just the "arm". Having trouble getting a decent shot of the "arm". In the craigslist photo, you can just see the edge of the "arm" at the lower right side, protruding from the back. Once we get a shot where you can tell what you're looking at, we'll post it.

Nice to know there is another one of these stoves out in the world! Thanks, what a helpful and friendly group you are! :-)

Wow I would have swore that wasn't what you were talking about. Cool! You welcome anytime, thats why we are all here, to help eachother.
Post those pics when you can, and we'll get the arm solved. BTW, do you have that massive blower setup on the back of yours?

Melmike, try contacting the Medford stove owner to see if he has documentation or knows of any. What are you heating with that stove? Looks like it would heat a stadium. What is the wood consumption like?

Hi M&M, welcome.

What area of the globe are you in? May be a regional maker.
