Wood Stove with Damper

Is there any way to safely use a wood stove with the flu pipe pointing up a chiminey? That is, not really "installed", just pointing up the chimeny.

It can be done if there is a damper sealing block off plate. However, if this a big chimney the stove draft can be poor and it is almost a guarantee of serious creosote accumulation and the flue gases cool down quickly to condensation temp.Note that there must be only one stove per chimney.

wouldn't the creosote issue be the same as running a traditional fire in a grate?

There is a lot more volume of heat and air heading up the chimney with an open fire and with much larger pieces of wood. But you can gunk up a chimney with open fires of poorly seasoned wood.
