wood that's too special to burn

I work for the state. A few years back a bunch of alders got cut down on state property and I joked with a work friend that I'd like to get the wood. After several weeks, he showed up at my work area with a gift. I've had it sitting by my stove for years now, but I can't bring myself to burn this alder round that was hand delivered to me by a state employee on behalf of the Governor.

Grind it up into chips and use it for smoking some fish...ideally eels! It'll last longer that way!

"State" property = public property. That was your tree to begin with.

I once gave a handful of splits to a neighbor that is into turning pens and pepper mills. I said I'd get him some different species to play with and took him some oak, maple, magnolia and cherry. In about a week he popped around my backyard with a beautiful oak pen he had turned. Nicest pen I have ever had and one of the nicest gestures I've ever received. I would of burned that piece of oak up otherwise....

Burn the wood, but keep that official looking "from the governor" sign.

I have about four beautiful center cut blocks of black cherry that I sore in my shed. I'll do something with them one of these days. Maybe some wooden spoons. Reddish tint might be pretty.

Wife had me put 4 nice splits of straight-grained white oak in a galvanized bucket next to the fireplace hearth. It's for looks and I'm not allowed to burn it. I know it's down to 10% moisture by now too

You can always burn the pen when it runs out of ink
