Wood trim heat shield

The distance from the side of my fireplace opening to the wood trim on the right is 11" - closer than most wood stove installations are going to allow. Can installing a heat shield to protect the trim be as a simple as an L shaped piece of metal installed into the brick and extending out 2-3" from the floor up several feet?

Most examples I have seen online are for protecting the bottom of a wood mantle - not trim to the side. Thanks!

That trim is flush; it doesn't project past the fireplace flush. I don't think this is an issue. Of course, it depends on the stove. Some have side clearances less than 11".

Yeah, I made some heat shields for my mantle surround by bending a piece of 6" aluminum flashing at a 30 degree angle and mounting it with 1" ceramic spacers. Painted it black and it doesn't look too offensive.
