Got this stuff from from a recycling center in MD. Pain in the butt to split. You can see the one piece that I split that its extremely stringy.

All three are the same log.

Gum sounds like its impossible to split but you can split Elm. Just not so easy with an axe.
I feel pretty confident its Elm.

Well, I've split gum before. It's a major pain in the butt. After doing some further reading, I'm just going to throw these logs into the fire pit and not even bother splitting them.
