Pets and Wood Stoves (not poop related I promise)

dogs are alot smarter then people.

I have 2 dogs. One is a Border Collie and the other an Australian Sheppard. The BC wont get anywhere near the stove when its hot but will lay close when its just warm. The Aussie will lay as close as he can till he gets to hot then moves away. So Id say unless your dogs are really stupid they will shy away. Like most animals they have a fear of fire and extreme heat.

I'd love to be able to say my dog is smart enough to keep her distance, but when I used to have a fireplace, she'd stand in front of it wagging her big golden retriever tail so close to the fire that I'd start to smell burnt dog! She never even noticed it, but it was funny. I used to keep a spray bottle of water handy to put out her tail on a regular basis. Guess it all comes down to type of dogs you have.

My dogs both keep their distance from the stove. However, when I leave them home alone I always close them in the kitchen away from the wood stove because I don't want to have to worry about their romping around together and possibly knocking something flammable onto the stove like a sofa cushion.

Yeah, dogs are like any animal, and they naturally fear fire. My Brittany will get as close as she can without burning her hair off, but my Lab doesn't take chances. I think the closest she's ever been is 3-4 feet.

Don't worry so much. A 600 degree stove is a 600 degree stove, whether you're a human or a canine.

My Lab will carry it with no problem. Unfortunately, its out into the back yard to bury in one of the 50 holes she'd dug!!

Most dogs don't need any training.. But Rudy your golden is a golden, and I believe that's how they got there name. Because there are loyal to the bone (God Love Em) and always wanting to please! Who else would catch there tail on fire just to sit by your side. Enjoy your friend and don't forget the spray bottle.

Moe- English Bulldog gets as close as he can, and Maggie, Cocker Spaniel, usually lays against him on the side away from the stove.

Your dogs will figure it out..

My dogs actually go sit in front of the stove when I get home, waiting for me to fire it up.

Have never had any of my dogs hurt by the stove. Over the decades, all of them have laid right by it or the small breed dogs lay under it. Right now I have a 10 year old yellow lab and a beagle puppy. The yellow lab lays right next to it, usually with her head stuck under the stove, and the beagle is small enough that she lays right under the stove.

Our newfie rott chow mix loves to be near it..sometimes her front paws are underneath it...never been burned...she loves the snow and cold will be outside for 5-6 hours below zero and then right in front of the stove..somebodys on here would come looking for them when the flames died down...she will pull the sled with the christmas tree on it but i have not figured out the cart with harness yet for getting it from woodshed to house..

She loves to go cutting wood sees the saw and tools going into the truck and starts jumping around all jacked up...

My dog Buster loves to lay in front of the wood burning stove. He now knows what "excuse me" means since I say that to him everytime I need to get to the stove's front door. He wouldn't touch it, but he loves toys. One of his toys is a stuff duck (looks real too) and he loves it, some times he will swing it around and let it loose and fly,...so I fear it flying on or in front of the stove. That would surely be a concern!
