When Im on hearth and see people talking how they have 6 face cords I chuckle and wonder why they aren't just saying they have 3 cord of wood. Ive often wondered if its a genuine thing based on their experiences or if it just sounds better to them because the number is higher!
Exactly what peaked my interest in this. Moreover, Sean quotes 6 face cords as 3 cords, whereas HotCoals says it's only 2 cords. Both answers are right, if it stacks to 4' x 8' x anything you like. The seller who cuts to 16" is giving you 12% less wood per face cord, than his competitor, who might cut 18".

I understand "that's just how it's done in NY," but that's not the way most think, I think. ;-)

I guess I'm done poking the bear... who's next! ;lol;

There is no unit that is defined as a face cord recognized by weights and measures on the federal level. They might as well just say some wood.. If they give the dimensions of the amount of wood stacked tightly packed parallel to each other then you can calculate the cubic feet and divide that into 128 to get what percentage of a cord.

If the face cord thing bothers you, you should look at the way it's actually advertised. I almost NEVER see it ADVERTISED as a FACE cord, rather, as a CORD. So, when people in this part of WNY buy wood, they do buy it by the "cord", however they are really buying a "face cord", or wood stacked in a 4x8 space cut however long. There's a big tree service with a large sign that advertises firewood starting at $70 a cord. I can't tell you how much I want to order like 10 cords...then nail them for 10 CORDS. I know they mean FACE cords, but...they clearly say CORDS on the sign. If I only had the space...

Now you've got it!

We could always talk about how much warmer your house would be if you replaced all those terrible old wood sash windows with nice, effecient vinyl double pane replacements :p (this, of course, is a joke and that would be a travisty)

The whole concept of a face cord was unknown and strange to me . . . never heard it until I became a member here. I suspect if someone tried to pass off a face cord as a cord of wood here there would be some strong words had between the buyer and seller.

You know, actually, some sort of desciption of the difference in a cord and face cord (as loosely defined as it may be) wouldn't be the worst thing somewhere at the top of the fora. I never knew it was such an odd thing, being used ot it here, and can see how it can lead to wildly different numbers when people start talking about how much the burned in a year, got from a tree or have stacked in their yard.

This could just be my perception of it from out here. Sounds like a weird measure for wood if there are all different interpretations of what a face cord actually is.

Around here it is almost always 4x8x16"...1/3 of a cord.

Yep the farther west in WNY the more you see that deal..lol.

wow, Rochester is alot cheaper, i wish we had guys like that selling here in Buffalo area, Ill pay $55 all day for a FACE CORD

It's out there...but it seems the further out you get, especially into the southtowns, it does get cheaper. But then there's the gas to drive to it! Plus there's the 50 mile law too (you can't transport firewood more than 50 miles in NYS).

$60 Fc this is NOT seasoned, in Lockport: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/for/4135882731.html

$60 a FC p/u but they don't say where they are, it's a 585 number though... http://buffalo.craigslist.org/grd/4112372262.html

$60 FC p/u in Ransomville: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/grd/4164053774.html

I don't think this is 3 FC, but it does look seasoned in Lockport: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/grd/4156529864.html

This might be another good deal for you if it is really the qty they say (2 FULL cords, so about 6 face cords) for $350: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/for/4068600341.html

I'm in wny as well, Olean area. You should be able to scrounge some pine for free. Nobody around here thinks you can burn it.
